THREAD LIFT FOR FACIAL LIFT AND FACIAL CONTOURING
THE DOCTOR WHO PIONEERED THE KOREAN FACIAL THREAD LIFT ULTRA V TECHNIQUE IN THAILAND
The innovative procedure for facial thread lift has been developed for 20 years starting in Europe. In the early days the procedure simply involved using threads to sew the sagging skin. Usually the lower part of the face is lifted and tied to the flat part of the face. The procedure was then developed to use cogged or barbed threads that do not need to be tied. The texture of this thread allows it to attach to the skin. However, this type of thread is large as a result the skin suffers much traumatization. The results are also not natural looking. In addition, the threads do not affect the skin elasticity, as a consequence the result of the treatment is not lasting. Therefore, this procedure was unheard of by Thais in the past 10 years.
In 2007 the gold thread technique was introduced in Thailand. The idea is that gold is expensive and is considered a pure product. It has the quality in making the skin firm. As a result the treatment price was very high in the range of millions of baht. The principle of the procedure is different from the cogged or barbed thread technique. The gold thread is inserted into the skin and it stimulates the skin creating the desired lift. However, gold is a metal and cannot dissolve naturally thus it may cause side effects in the long term. Possible complications may include heavy metal toxicity. In addition, once the gold threat facial lift is done the individual may have problems using computer X-rays because gold will appear in the film and it may act as a conductor. The heat would transfer to the gold causing possible damage to the skin. Most importantly once the gold is inserted into the skin, it cannot be removed. As a result the popularity of gold thread facial lift dwindled in popularity.
Towards the end of 2010, Dr. Kwon Han Jin, a Korean doctor, developed the innovative Ultra V Lift technique. He invited Dr. Puttipong to join him in the research and development of this technique. The procedure utilizes a special substance called PDO (Polydioxanone), which is used in heart and blood vessel surgery in children. This type of thread is very fine having the same dimensions as a strand of hair. This substance would naturally dissolve in 8 – 12 months. The principle is the same as the gold thread facial lift. The thread stimulates the skin to produce collagen creating the lift and over time the threads would dissolve. This eliminates any worry of residue. In 2011 Dr. Kwon Han Jin and Dr. Puttipong Poomsuwan introduced this technique to a conference of aesthetic surgeons in Bangkok. In a matter of a few months, this technique spread all over Thailand. This firmly cemented Dr. Puttipong’s reputation as the originator and pioneer in the introduction of Korean facial thread life technique in Thailand.
Today the facial thread lift technique has improved greatly. The thread has also been developed to facilitate better and longer lasting results. The cogged or barbed threads have been refined to be thinner thus reducing the irritation to the skin. The thin non-cogged threads have also been further improved to have twisted features. Dr. Puttipong’s technique combines the analysis of the skin problem and the facial shape. In some cases, a patient might need to be treated with procedures using different types of threads or may need double layered threads. As a result the treatment by Dr. Puttipong not only lifts the face but also contours in aesthetically.
